ABOUT

CHEMISTRY

Chemistry is the study of matter, what it is made of, how it is organized, and how it responds to changing circumstances. Through chemistry, scientists explore the world, both natural and man-made.

Because of its fundamental nature, chemists can address challenges in a number of areas, solving problems that impact our daily lives, from food production to energy storage and more.

Chemistry students at the University of Tennessee benefit from nationally and internationally recognized faculty, state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, and an innovative research program exploring both traditional and emerging research areas.

The Department of Chemistry was the first department at the University of Tennessee to grant a PhD in 1947. Since then, we have continued to provide high-quality education and valuable degrees to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students leave our programs prepared for careers in industry, academia, healthcare and more.
